I think every time we question why there aren't more of [x marginalized people] in a space we need to remember the intentionality is on the space, not the people. Reframe the question as "why is this space not welcoming to/supporting this kind of person?" Because when you simply push marginalized people into hostile spaces and call it progress, you're saying that person is responsible for making a space they deserve to be in safe to exist in. That's not always the case and it's a huge burden- it's more effective and less exhausting to work towards making the space more welcoming vs the person more palatable to the "in group"

Yes this is about luke. But it's also about nassib or women in stem or black students at pwi's or literally ANYTHING!! Institutions will parade out marginalized folks and reap the rewards of appearing progressive while never putting an ounce of work towards making these spaces habitable. If this kid's career fizzles out in a year or two- the conversation cannot be about how good he was on the ice or not- it's about how the nhl does not intend for out queer players to stay

One of my mutuals said the quiet part out loud: hockey is the last frontier for a “pure” white sport and the NHL is hellbent on keeping it that way, no matter how many rolls of Pride tape they give to the players. And part of keeping that so-called purity is keeping it as cishet dude normative as possible.

Because otherwise we’d see investment of the sport outside of rich white families who can afford it, and we’d see women’s hockey succeeding at least on the same level as the WNBA or women’s soccer, and so on and so forth.

The NHL would rather remain the smallest and least-monied of the big four in North America than ever truly embrace non-white, female, or LGBTQ fans. We have so much proof of it. It’s why JT Brown was blackballed. It’s why PK gets so much grief for simply having a bubbly personality, no matter how many police officers he shakes hands with. It’s why people are adamant that hockey “stays apolitical” regarding BLM while carrying on with military nights.

The NHL can’t disappear Black players, though it’ll make the process of getting into and staying in the league as hostile as possible, while maintaining plausible deniability. But they can disappear a gay one.

Local Affiliate Hockey Announcers: try their best, knows everyone’s names, tell weird stories about their hockey careers, only sometimes get too distracted to see a goal coming, chaotic good

NHL on NBC: doesn’t give a fuck, only knows 5 out of 31 teams, Pierre McGuire, chaotic evil

The fact that there are people who don’t turn around and leave immediately when the go into a restaurant and see Gordon Ramsay there for an episode of Kitchen Nightmares absolutely boggles the mind.
